My School Loo in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines

More than 20 public elementary schools with 3000-4000 students participated in the first My School Toilet contest in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. The GTOs "My School Loo" sanitation and hygiene education materials were used in the contest, which were developed together with UN-Water. The celebration culminated with the award ceremony on World Toilet Day 2010.

The contest took place within a wider project to address and improve school sanitation facilities in the Philippines as well as to raise awareness of the necessity and importance of basic hygiene and sanitation.

The GTO would like to thank all of the students, teachers and all the other participants.

We would like to thank Robert Gensch (Sustainable Sanitation Center - Xavier University) for coordinating and organising the event, the Department of Education and all involved city officials for their help in facilitating the competition and the Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) for its financial support.

My School Loo gets Top Marks!

The results are in! The My School Loo hygeine education programme has had its first larg-scale test run in the Philippines.

The results of the first intermediate evaluation demonstrate that the pupils enjoyed using the materials and also made clear learning progress. Despite the materials being tested across a range of age-groups we did not identify any problems with regard to understanding or cultural barriers.

At this point we would like to thank Robert Gensch and the Xavier University who made this test run possible.

"My School Loo" Goes Live!

“My School Loo” is a set of educational tools that have been designed with a dual focus: to build a better awareness of sanitation and hygiene in developing countries; and also to provide a means by which children can take that learning and pass it on to their communities and importantly to local decision-makers.

The kids from Bongongon Elementary School were the first to get the opportunity to try these fun activities out, and by the looks of it they certainly had a great time (and also learnt lots along the way)!

If we’re going to win this competition we need to be organised and know our sanitation stuff!
