The GTO's Campaign for Sanitation

The United Nations' International Year of Sanitation (IYS 2008) was a critically timed and unique opportunity to place sanitation in the spotlight and to generate political will. In 2009 the GTO will continue to create synergies between the numerous organisations working in the sector, in order to get sanitation back on track towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The German Toilet Organization (GTO) has expertise in the communication of sanitation topics.

In 2009, the GTO will expand its efforts through a worldwide marketing campaign aimed at raising awareness of sanitation issues and increasing levels of particpation.

In order to increase its outreach, the GTO aims to partner with key UN Agencies and other NGOs in conveying the urgency of the sanitation message to both political leaders and the general public. Any interested organisation will be able to make use of the campaign materials in their own regions.

Key Goals of the "Sanitaion is Dignity" Campaign

  • generate political will and concerted action for improving the sanitation situation
  • increase the willingness of communities, governments and other donors to invest in sanitation
